Today is the first day of July, and July is Disability Pride Month!
The month of July was chosen to be Disability Pride Month because, on July 26, 1990, US President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act into law.
The purpose of July is to listen to disabled people! Not only to what they say about their rights and what they need but also to what they share about their experiences.
It's important to recognize that although the disabled community is often referred to collectively, the disabled community is not a monolith. There are so many different disabilities that affect people's lives to varying degrees. Even within the same disability, people can have completely different experiences and relationships with their disability.
